Against the Odds: Big Hands from April 8th

The Challenge session last Wednesday logged a staggering 2,000 hands, several of which exceeded $100,000 in size. We’ve already broken down some of the strategy and thought process behind these big hands from last week, so now let’s break down the odds as well.

Here are three big hands from the session, including a monster suckout where durrrr backdoored a boat to defeat Patrik’s flopped flush:

durrrr wins with a better Full House

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BB): $71664.50
Patrik Antonius (BTN/SB): $218258.50

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
Patrik Antonius raises to $1200, durrrr raises to $3600, Patrik Antonius raises to $10800, durrrr raises to $32400, Patrik Antonius calls $21600

Flop: ($64800.00) Jd 5d 7d (2 players)
durrrr bets $39264.50 all in, Patrik Antonius calls $39264.50

Turn: ($143329.00) 5s (2 players – 1 is all in)

River: ($143329.00) 5c (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $143329.00
durrrr shows 7c As 3h Ac (a full house, Fives full of Aces)
Patrik Antonius shows Ks 9d Kd Qs (a full house, Fives full of Kings)
durrrr wins $143328.50

Most of the action in this hand transpired preflop with durrrr five-betting his A-A-7-3. Patrik definitely has second best with his K-K-Q-9, but aces versus kings in Omaha is very different from aces versus kings in Hold’em and Antonius is actually only a 60/40 dog to win the hand going into the flop.

Holding double suited cards works to Patrik’s advantage when he flops a king-high diamond flush to durrrr’s overpair. He is the 96% favorite to win the hand and durrr’s only hope is to go runner-runner to make a full house. With the second five on the turn durrrr now has a 10% chance to fill up on the river by hitting one of the remaining fives or aces in the decks (a grand total of four outs). The final card is a third five, which ships the $143K pot durrr’s way and makes for one of the biggest suckouts of the Challenge so far.

Top Two and Bottom Set

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BTN/SB): $65597.50
Patrik Antonius (BB): $129383.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
durrrr raises to $1200, Patrik Antonius raises to $3600, durrrr calls $2400

Flop: ($7200.00) Qc Kh 6c (2 players)
Patrik Antonius bets $5600, durrrr calls $5600

Turn: ($18400.00) 2s (2 players)
Patrik Antonius bets $16800, durrrr raises to $56397.50 all in, Patrik Antonius calls $39597.50

River: ($131195.00) 7d (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $131195.00
durrrr shows Jh 6d 6s Jc (three of a kind, Sixes)
Patrik Antonius shows As 8h Ks Qs (two pair, Kings and Queens)
durrrr wins $131194.50
(Rake: $0.50)

This hand isn’t a suckout, but it is a common occurrence in Omaha to find top two pair up against bottom set, so we thought we’d break down the odds for those of you curious to see just how far behind two pair with overcards is in this situation.

Preflop the two hands are in a statistical coinflip with the slight edge going to durrrr’s J-J-6-6. After the flop, the set of sixes should prevail around 80% of the time. A blank on the turn leaves Patrik with just a ten percent chance to fill up, which he fails to do on the river, so durrrr takes down the sizeable pot.

Flopped Straight Loses to Boat

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BTN/SB): $273772.00
Patrik Antonius (BB): $43991.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
durrrr raises to $1200, Patrik Antonius raises to $3600, durrrr raises to $10800, Patrik Antonius raises to $32400, durrrr calls $21600

Flop: ($64800.00) Jh Ah Th (2 players)
Patrik Antonius bets $11591 all in, durrrr calls $11591

Turn: ($87982.00) Qh (2 players – 1 is all in)

River: ($87982.00) Tc (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $87982.00
durrrr shows Kd Jc 2c Qd (a straight, Ace high)
Patrik Antonius shows 6c Ad Ac Js (a full house, Aces full of Tens)
Patrik Antonius wins $87981.50
(Rake: $0.50)

Here is another instance in which flopping the nuts wasn’t enough to take the pot. Preflop Patrik’s hand has the 65/35 edge over durrrr’s. Both really hit the flop with Patrik holding top set to durrrr’s Broadway straight. The straight is the 70% favorite going into the turn. The queen on the turn leaves Patrik with only a 17.5% chance to win the pot and an 8.5% chance to tie if a king comes on the river, giving them both the same straight. Durrrr is also holding two of Patrik’s outs, a queen and a jack, leaving him drawing to just seven outs. Luckily for Patrik, he hits the ten on the river to make his boat and win the hand.
