Dan Cates Extends Lead to Over $1 Million in Durrrr Challenge

If you’re a fan of Tom “durrrr” Dwan, then the future isn’t looking so bright in the ongoing Durrrr Challenge. In a 780-hand session that played out on Friday morning, Dan “jungleman12” Cates booked $270,000 in profit and now leads by a commanding $1.2 million in the challenge after just over 18,000 hands. Is it too late for Dwan to come back?

The largest pot of yesterday’s session came in at $127,000. In it, Dwan raised to $1,200 before the flop and Cates popped the price of poker to $4,000. Dwan called and the flop fell 5-6-7, rainbow. Cates bet $4,800 and Dwan pushed it up to $12,500. Cates 3bet all-in for nearly $60,000 and Dwan called, setting up a $127,000 bounty.

Do you already know what Cates and Dwan had? The former showed 8-7 for top pair and an open-ended straight draw, while Dwan tabled 6-5 for bottom two pair. The turn and river were dealt twice and, in the first board, running jacks gave Cates the lead with two pair, jacks and sevens, counterfeiting Dwan’s two pair. Cates found a nine on the second board for a straight to scoop both halves of the pot and send his opponent’s rail reeling.

A total of 18,236 hands have been played out of the 50,000 needed to finish the second cycle of the Durrrr Challenge. Friday’s action was the first since March 8th and only the third encounter of 2011.

While conceding that Cates was running hot, one poster on TwoPlusTwo questioned Dwan’s hand selection: “Durrrr’s pre-flop hand ranges are so wide that I can’t see him making much of a comeback. I mean some of the hands he shows up with/gets to the river with are really pretty weak.” Dwan was apparently on an airplane when the session occurred and bowed out due to the internet getting “shakier.”

The action took place between about 4:00am ET and 6:00am ET on Friday morning. One TwoPlusTwo member discussed the odd hour of the night: “It amazes me how durrrr finds the weirdest times to play, i.e. when he’s just about to get room service and mid-air flights. Still, a few hundred hands get us closer to the end.”
