Two Critical Antonius Hands

We have seen through this now dragged-out first phase of the Durrrr Challenge long dormant breaks are followed by massive sessions. On October 28th, there was a lengthy session that lasted (with small breaks) for over eight hours, accounting for 2,000 hands of Pot Limit Omaha. Tom “durrrr” Dwan increased his lead in the challenge, which could have been more if not for a couple of hands where Patrik Antonius was somewhat fortunate in the outcome. Let’s take a look at two of these hands to see what happened.

Analysis

Antonius started this hand on the button and, with an intriguing hand of A-8-K-7 double-suited, made the raise and then 4bet back at Dwan. Both players proved to be double-suited, with Dwan holding T-7-6-T and Antonius holding the superior diamonds. The flop came 4-A-6 with two hearts, giving Dwan a flush draw and a pair of tens. Antonius hit top pair plus a gutshot redraw to a five. The bullets flew, as Durrrr check-raised and Antonius shoved his entire stack in. Dwan called and both players saw that it was nothing more than a coin flip. The king on the turn gave Antonius two pair, which held against Dwan for a $180,376 pot.

Analysis

Both players had absolute monster hands pre-flop and we saw a rare 5bet from Dwan with T-K-A-K suited to diamonds, which was called by Antonius and his 9-J-9-Q suited to hearts. With $36,000 in the pot at the flop, it was predictable that Antonius would shove over Durrrr’s pot-sized flop bet on a T-7-J rainbow board. At that point, Dwan had a pair of kings plus a gutshot to a queen, while Antonius countered with a pair of jacks plus a big straight draw. Dwan held the lead in the hand once the money went in by a 59% to 41% margin, but Antonius hit a huge turn by making a set of nines. That meant Durrrr was drawing as a 90% to 10% dog to four presumed queen outs because kings were dirty (they would give Antonius a straight). Chalk up a $163,594 semi-heater to Antonius.
